Hello, my name is Malu, Lu for short, I'm 18 minus three weeks, I live in Belgium. I bought Dogville on a Nicole/Lars von Trier-loving whim two days ago, and watched it for the first time today.
I honestly couldn't conjure up enough superlatives to describe this film to satisfy my own need to explain to you all what an enormously profound impact this film has already had upon me, after just the first viewing. It is such a powerful driven character study of humanity and emotion, putting a seemingly quiet mountain town under the lens like this and watching the unraveling as an unexpected factor is dropped in their midst. It tells such a poignant story of a single woman's metamorphosis in view of the degenerating morality of the people she depends on. And the effects of this and the will of survival versus an exploiting community that reduces her to a lesser being in order to treat her as less than a dog, when it is them whose true natures blossom as they get to exorcize power for the first time...
It really is one of the most impressive movies I've ever seen, and this is just the basic story I've covered so far. The execution itself... it is such an interesting concept, of taking the subject itself and stripping away everything else surrounding it, leaving room for utmost interpretation. Hardly any decor to speak of (a charcoal drawing on the floor for a dog, no doors just the sound of a knob turning and the actors moving as though they're opening and closing it), no sky, no ground, no walls... Especially in one particularly powerful scene where something unforgivable happens to Grace, this effect is used wonderfully. You simply *can't* look away. I didn't even notice the three hour length until I checked the DVD box, they flew by as though the movie took only half that time to play out.
Another incredible thing is that, because of the tremendous acting, it didn't take but 20 minutes at most to entirely forget I was looking at, what was basically, an empty set. My imagination added what wasn't shown, and everything else was given to me by the actors.
